A couple of months ago I got the idea to build a custom PC that featured water cooling. I have built many computers in the past but had never done anything with liquid/water based cooling. After pouring over many articles and watching many videos I had a good idea of the basics. This series of posts will seek to act as a beginner’s guide as well as chronicle the experience of water cooling a PC.
PC Water Cooling Beginner’s Guide Stages
I decided to break the building of my water cooled PC into several stages. My main two reasons for doing it this way are that this is a learning experience for me and the desire to test components as I have them available to me. Some of the items I decided to purchase will take some time to get here. However I wanted to be able to test items such as the motherboard, drives, etc. to ensure they were not DOA or having issues unrelated to water cooling the PC. The main stages I am breaking my build up in to are as follows.
PC Water Cooling Beginner’s Guide – Prep Work
This part of the build will mainly involve part selection and sourcing. Any needed research related to these items will be made.
PC Water Cooling Beginner’s Guide – Stage 1
In this part of the build I will be setting up the major components of the PC such as motherboard, processor, drives, etc. on a test bench to make sure all components are basically working and that I can boot the PC.
PC Water Cooling Beginner’s Guide – Stage 2
During this stage of the water cooled PC I will put the major components into a standard case and have a usable PC. The water cooling will consist of an all in one unit that cools the processor. Baseline testing and experience of the PC components will be documented to have a comparison starting point.
PC Water Cooling Beginner’s Guide – Stage 3
This stage of the build will feature a fully custom water cooled PC. For now this will be done with flexible tubing. Depending on the experience and look I may add a future stage where I switch to rigid tubing.
